The Navigators scored three times in the first inning last night, but ultimately the Gulls chipped away at the lead en route to a 6-4 victory. The loss dropped North Shore to 1-3 on the season against Newport and moved the Gulls into a tie for first place with the Navigators. The Navs got three straight singles with two outs in the first, which was followed by an error and another base hit to give starter Michael Johnson (Dartmouth) a three-run lead.
But Newport touched up Johnson for two in the second and later tied it up in the fourth before a Tim Kiene solo homer gave the Gulls a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Conor Keniry added a solo shot of his own an inning later and Jack Reinheimer’s RBI single made it 6-3 inthe seventh. The Navigators added one in the eighth on an RBI single by Dario Pizzano (Columbia), but ended up leaving four runners on in the eighth and ninth innings combined. Matt Boulter (SNHU) and Eric Jagielo (Notre Dame) both went 3-for-4 for North Shore.
