Navs suffer setback to Gulls

A night after walk-off heroics at Fraser Field, the Newport Gulls came to Lynn and scored five times against North Shore starter Dan Slania (Notre Dame), as the Navigators suffered a 6-1 setback to mark their second loss in their last three games on Thursday night.

With the loss, Newport (9-7) pulled even in the standings with North Shore, who fell to 12-10 on the season. The Navigators will begin a three-game road trip Friday in New Bedford before returning home to Fraser next Tuesday.

Newport scored once in each of the first three innings, taking an early lead on a Tim Kiene RBI single in the first before tacking on another in the second on a fielder’s choice.

The Navigators narrowed the gap with their only run of the game in the bottom of the second, as Matt Boulter (So. New Hampshire) knocked in Clinton Harwick (Point Loma) with a single to right. However, Newport went on to score again in the third and twice more in the fourth to make it 5-1. The Gulls also tacked on a run in the seventh.

Saulyer Saxon (Oklahoma State), Harwick, and Boulter all had two hits for the Navigators in the loss.
