The Florida Gators lost 2-1 in 11 innings last night in Game 1 of the College World Series Final against South Carloina in Omaha. Navigators infielder and Gators third baseman Cody Dent went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss and drove in the game’s first run with a sac fly in the third. He was later thrown out trying to score the game-winning run from second in the 10th inning. Game 2 is tonight at 8:00 p.m.
Dent, a sophomore, is the son of former New York Yankee and three-time MLB All-Star Bucky Dent and is hitting .304 (14-for-46) with eight runs and five RBI in 16 games since becoming the Gators starter at the hot corner. He also has a .467 on-base percentage during that span as a result of 14 walks. His batting average has risen over 100 points (from .091 to .215) since being inserted into the starting lineup in late May. His teammates Nolan Fontana, Brian Johnson, and Mike Zunino are members of Team USA.
