The first round of NECBL weekly awards both went to members of the North Shore Navigators, it was announced on Tuesday, as rightfielder Dario Pizzano was named the Player of the Week and lefthander Michael Johnson was named Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 8.
Oddly enough, both attend Ivy League Schools and both also have local ties. Pizzano is a Saugus native and attends Columbia, while Johnson hails from Georgetown and plays for Dartmouth. Both were members of last year’s 2010 NECBL championship team as well.
Pizzano was hitting .571 entering last night’s game at Old Orchard Beach. Pizzano reached base in his first seven plate appearances of the season and went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI in a 12-1 win over the Newport Gulls on Friday.
The sophomore hit .359 at Columbia this spring with nine home runs and 36 RBI while leading the team in virtually every offensive category.
Johnson, also a sophomore, threw five shutout innings and allowed just one hit with seven strikeouts in the win over Newport to garner Pitcher of the Week honors. Johnson went 3-0 in in 12 appearances this spring for the Big Green.
The Navigators will have their home opener at Fraser Field on Thursday night (6:15 PM) against the New Bedford Bay Sox.
