LYNN, MA — Former Navigators Dario Pizzano and Jason Banos of Columbia were both selected to the Ivy League First Team on Thursday. Both have local ties as well, as Pizzano is a Saugus native and Banos hails from Lynnfield.
For the sophomore Pizzano, it was his second First Team nod in two seasons at Columbia. The outfielder also led the Ivy League in slugging (.654) for the second straight year, and overall hit .359 with nine homers and 36 RBI to lead the Lions in all three categories. Pizzano finished the year tops among conference leaders in home runs, total bases and slugging, and was a top-3 finisher in doubles, RBI, walks, and on-base percentage. Pizzano is slated to return to Navs this summer.
It was the first First Team selection for Banos, who finished his senior season with a .323 average, six homers, and 30 RBI. He finished the 2010 NECBL season second in the league in hitting (.348) and was also a league All-Star last summer.
The pair also earned team honors earlier this week, as Pizzano received the Lou Gehrig MVP award as the team’s top player, while Banos won the Joseph P. Allen Memorial award for his leadership and sportsmanship on and off the field.
