Sophomore Dario Pizzano and senior Jason Banos of Columbia both received team awards this week for their impressive seasons with the Lions. Both were key members of last year’s NECBL title team, and both are also North Shore locals, as Pizzano is from Saugus and Banos is from Lynnfield. Pizzano will also be back with the Navigators for a second go-round this summer.
Pizzano received the Lou Gehrig Team MVP award as the team’s top player. For the second straight year, the outfielder led the Ivy League in slugging at .654, and overall hit .359 with nine homers and 36 RBI to lead the Lions in all three categories. Pizzano finished the year tops among cocnference leaders in home runs, total bases and slugging, and was a top-3 finisher in doubles, RBI, walks, and on-base percentage.
Banos received the Joseph P. Allen Memorial Award, which is given to a player that displays exceptional spirit and leadership. Banos, a two-time captain, finished his senior season with a .323 average, six homers, and 30 RBI. He finished the 2010 NECBL season second in hitting (.348) and was a league All-Star last summer.
