The Navigators, after losing Game 1 of their best-of-three series with the Newport Gulls, beat their division rivals at Fraser Field on Friday 2-0 before rolling to a 5-2 win on Saturday in Newport to take the series, two games to one. The win was the Navs second straight over Newport, even though the Gulls had won 11 straight dating back to the regular season before the Game 2 loss.
The win earned the Navigators a spot in the NECBL championship series on Sunday night. Game 1 will be tonight (Sunday) from Fraser Field at 6:15 p.m. against the Danbury Westerners, who also won two straight to take their three-game series with the top-seeded North Adams SteepleCats out West.
Navs starter Crayton Bare got the win in Game 3 after allowing just two runs on six hits over five innings. He also struck out five. Newport starter Geoff Brown lasted just two innings and allowed four runs on five hits to take the loss at home.
All-Star Game MVP Jason Banos (Columbia) went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI, and two runs scored. He also doubled in the series-clinching victory.
