The Navigators are in Newport, RI for Game 1 of a best-of-three series to decide the Eastern Division Finals. The winner will advance to the NECBL championship series. The Navs took their opening playoff series two games to one over the Sanford Mainers after they ultimately prevailed in a 7-6 win in Wednesday’s decisive Game 3 to earn a match-up with the Gulls to decide the East. In Game 1 on Monday, Crayton Bare pitched a complete game shutout on Monday at Fraser, but Sanford evened things up with a 5-1 victory on Tuesday at Goodall Park.
Newport had already swept the Laconia Muskrats prior to North Shore’s Game 3 against Sanford, as Newport starter Tony Bucciferro earned the win in the first game of their series, going seven strong innings and allowing just two runs while scattering seven hits. Mark Appel was even better the following night, as he threw eight scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in Game 2 to close out the series.

Nolan Corr, an NECBL All-Star, gets the Game 1 start tonight in Newport. Corr’s only outing against the Gulls came on June 27 when he got the victory in a 7-6 Navigators win at Fraser Field. He threw five scoreless innings and allowed just five hits in the win. Corr however only made one road start thoughout the regular season, as he got a no decision at Sanford on July 24 after giving up three runs in five innings.
Pat Light was also an NECBL All-Star in 2010, and he won his only start against North Shore this season, throwing seven scoreless innings in a 3-1 over the Navs on June 13 at Fraser Field. The Gulls won in all six of Light’s starts during the regular season.
