The North Shore Navigators narrowly prevailed in a 7-6 victory last night to take their best two-of-three series over the Sanford Mainers, who persevered and nearly battled their way back on two separate occasions in last night’s decisive Game 3 at Fraser Field. The victory marked the Navigators first playoff series win since their move to Lynn in 2008.
Down 7-4 with two outs in the ninth, Sanford’s Michael Roth hit a two-run homer to make it a one-run game off Navigators’ reliever Bryant Gauthier. After Gauthier had sat down the side in order in the eighth, he got two quick outs to begin the ninth inning before Joe Wendle tripled on a 1-2 pitch to extend the game for Roth.
Roth responded by belting a full-count offering to over the right field fence, but Gauthier got Mike McCann to ground out to second to end it and send the Navigators to the Eastern Division finals against the Newport Gulls.
The Navigators will travel to Newport tonight for Game 1 of a best two-of-three series to decide the East. North Shore will host Game 2 of the series at Fraser Field tomorrow (Friday) night at 6:15 p.m.
