Notes: Navigators 2009 Season

Gallo Mike…here are a few interesting notes from the beginning of the 2009 season…

Record Holders: On opening night, RHP Jared Freni set the record for most strikeouts in a game by a Navigators pitcher with nine against the Sanford Mainers.  On Sunday night, Mike Gallo blew that record out of the water, striking out 15 Silkworms.  He struck out more than half of the batters he faced (28), including seven in a row during a stretch of ten batters retired consecutively.  Gallo also broke the record for most team strkeouts in a game (12) by himself.

Crooked Numbers: In each of their three wins prior to yesterday’s victory over Danbury, the Navigators scored at least four runs in one inning.  After a five-run seventh helped the Navs to a 9-5 win on opening night, a four-run fifth sparked the Navs to a come-from-behind win over Lowell last Friday.  Against Manchester, it was a four-run eighth inning that provided insurance in a 7-1 victory in Manchester.

Four in a Row: Last night’s ballgame marked the fourth consecutive night in which the opposing team started a left-handed pitcher against the Navigators.  The Navs have gone 3-1 in games against southpaw starters.  Justin Edwards (Lowell All-Americans), Jared Balbach (Manchester Silkworms), and Charlie Benson (Danbury Westerners) suffered hard-luck losses, while David Palms (Newport Gulls) edged the Navs on Saturday night.
